Tombstone

Tombstone I rode into town on a September morning as one of those tourists.  I had followed the trail of Hwy 80 out of the North.   I hitched my Honda Civic to a street post right on the backside of the OK Corral.  What luck!  Grabbing my hat and my camera (I knew I had to do some shooting!), I headed to the other side of the OK Corral.   I walked a block to Allen Street and there it was—the Old West.  Allen Street is the unpaved no-cars-allowed 3-block hub of the historical section.    Only stagecoaches and horses permitted, wooden sidewalks, hitches for the horses, even some people walking around in Old West garb!

OK Corral My first stop on Allen Street had to be the OK Corral.  There is a re-creation of the actual Gunfight in the OK Corral everyday at 2pm (except first & third Sunday of month).  It is an entertaining spectacle with the whole story being acted out in front of a couple hundred bleacher-sitting tourists right in the Corral.   I decided to buy a ticket, which would entitle me to see the 2pm Gunfight, the OK Corral exhibits, a presentation in the Historama of Tombstone’s history, and a visit to the Epitaph Museum (site of old Tombstone’s newspaper).   It's  a bargain for four different glimpses of Western history!

There are several other museums in town too.    For authentic history buffs, the Tombstone Courthouse (built in 1882!) is your place; its first floor has historic documents while the second floor is the restored Old West courtroom.  The Rose Tree Museum boasts the World’s Largest Rose Tree.   And the Tombstone Rattlesnake Exhibit is there for those interested.  It's easy to spend the whole day in Tombstone.
